Jacob “Jake” Butcher attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where he graduated with honors with a degree in Agricultural Economics. After graduating from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Mr. Butcher worked as a legislative liaison for the Illinois Department of Insurance where he represented the agency before the Illinois General Assembly.

After serving as a legislative liaison for the Illinois Department of Insurance, Jake enrolled at Drake University Law School. While attending Drake, Jake served as the law clerk for United States Senator Tom Harkin on the United States Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry.  Mr. Butcher also served as a law clerk for Avenson, Oakley, & Cope, one of Iowa’s most respected governmental consulting firms. While clerking for Avenson, Oakley & Cope, Jake drafted and developed legislation pertaining to client interests. He also developed opinions on the constitutionality of state and local ordinances.

In addition to his public sector work, Jake also clerked at LakinChapman LLC now SL Chapman LLC. While clerking at LakinChapman, Jake worked on a variety of matters concerning tort liability issues. In this role, Jake prepared motions for state and federal courts as well as developed memos on several different aspects of the class action litigation process.

After graduating from Drake University Law School with honors, Jake began his career at Massie and Rennick LLC, a small general practice law firm in western, Illinois. At Massie & Rennick, Mr. Butcher served clients in adoption and divorce proceedings, agricultural law disputes, and estate planning. This allowed Jake to gain valuable courtroom experience while also developing client relationships in multiple practice areas.

After representing clients in a wide range of legal settings in private practice, Mr. Butcher returned to public service and became Assistant Legal Counsel to Senate President John J. Cullerton and the Senate Democratic Caucus. In this position, Jake drafted and negotiated legislation on behalf of members of the Senate Democratic Caucus. Mr. Butcher has staffed the Executive, State Government, and Local Government committees. He also served as the lead staff member and legal counsel to the Senate Labor Committee. As the staff member assigned to the Senate Labor Committee, Jake reviewed all legislation before the committee and advised Senate Democratic Committee members of the potential legal and political issues associated with each piece of legislation. This position allowed Jake to develop an in depth understanding of legal issues facing both labor unions and employers across the State of Illinois.

Jake Butcher was born and raised in Mt. Auburn, Illinois. Mr. Butcher grew up on his family’s farm where he worked with his grandfather and father on their swine and grain operations. Jake currently resides in Rochester, Illinois with his wife Becci and is still actively involved in his family’s farming operation. Jake is based in the firm’s Springfield office.
